Week 6 has been dominated by the weather in the UK. With the heaviest snow fall for around 18 years, business has been significantly disrupted throughout the week right across the country; showing once again that the countries transport infrastructure simply cannot cope with severe weather conditions despite the warning that it was coming.
At Palamatic, we did what we could to trade relatively unhindered. Some staff worked from home, while others made every effort to make it in to the factory. And others made sure that our customers service needs were responded to accordingly.

This week several members of our workshop and service team travelled to Worthing in West Sussex to carry out essential upgrade work for a long standing customer of Palamatic.

Bowers & Wilkins began life in 1966 when John Bowers and his lifelong friend Peter Hayward founded a manufacturing company, then called B&W Electronics, in Worthing, on the south coast of England. Now in 2009, the introduction of Diamond Dome tweeters into the 800 Series pushes tweeter technology to new heights and is recognised by the majority of industry commentators as the finest range of loudspeakers ever produced.

Following a 6 1/2 hour journey through the snow and traffic chaos, Stewart, Gary, John and Jamie finally arrived to carry out the repositioning of three Palamatic Vacuum Tube Lifters. All three vacuum lifters work on assembly lines, handling a range of speaker parts and assemblies.

Following the successful completion of the work Peter Gurr - Production Support Engineer at B&W commented...

"I have been working at B&W for 18 years now and for over ten of those I have had a lot of involvement with the Palamatic Handling Systems that we have in our Worthing site. These units have proved to be very efficient and reliable and the backup and support has been the same especially the customer service dept, who in the past have been very helpful in getting jobs sorted and keeping us up to speed with any problems. The engineers that have visited our site have been professional at all time and have been very helpful to us when we inquired into how there systems work for us to carry out our own routine maintenance. To sum it up I would have no problem in recommending Palamatic to anyone."

Snow Chaos

Heavy snow fall disrupted most things in the UK this week, including some vacuum lifter equipment installations.

Staff at Palamatic made every effort to get in to work; including mechanical design engineer Mark Elliott (bottom left image) who took this photograph with his cell phone (top right image) on his drive in to work over the picturesque moorland of the Peak District National Park between his home and Chesterfield.

During a break, Trevor, Mark, Mick and Darren (bottom right image) took at look at the local fishing pond.

Other staff worked at home, with equipment general arrangement drawings, essential customer contact and web design all continuing wherever possible. Staff who did make it in to work were on hand to answer calls and process sales and spare part orders, conscious that our overseas customers in particular were still in need of support. In fact the Materials Handling Division did receive four new system orders for custom vacuum tooling from our Canadian distributor and another from Peggy, our colleague in Houston, Texas for a rubber bale handling system.

Hopefully the weather will get back to normal next week (usually rain!) and re-scheduled installations will go ahead as planned.
