Sack LifterPaterson Arran Ltd is a combination of two Scottish businesses that produce high quality traditional foods such as shortbread, oatcakes, relishes and preserves. Paterson's was founded in 1895 in Rutherglen, Glasgow and has expanded to the current location in Livingston in 1971. The other site is on the Isle of Arran. Paterson Arran is a leading independent food manufacturer and exports to 45 countries worldwide.

Ian Carfrae, Quality Assurance Manager at Paterson Arran contacted Palamatic because they already had an existing vacuum tube lifting system and wanted to return to a company that they could trust to help with two new applications. A manual handling problem was identified in the lifting of 25kg/55lb sacks of ingredients, so Paterson Arran wanted to ensure that they could prevent potential injury to personnel and also speed up the process being carried out.

Two vacuum tube lifters were recommended in two separate areas of the factory, both performing similar processes. Using the new vacuum lifters operators lift the sacks from a pallet and place them into infeed stations where the contents of the sacks are discharged. All manual effort is removed from the process, which is now performed quickly and safely and the potential injury risks to the operators have been removed.

The vacuum lifters are both mounted on 'inverted swing jibs' which are used when overhead space is limited. These provide more height for the upwards stroke of the vacuum tube, to ensure that the required lift height can be performed. The swing jib and vacuum lifter is effortlessly manoeuvred around the required working area.

Ian is happy that the lifters have met all the objectives set out by Paterson Arran and commented that "The operators have noticed an obvious difference with the ease of lifting operations in both areas".
